Glimet forte 5/800 is indicated in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus where diet alone or diet and sulfonylurea cannot satisfactorily lower blood glucose levels.

Dosage and Administration

  • Glimet Forte 5/800 should be given with meal.
  • The usual starting dose is 2 tablets per day at the main meal. In any event it is inadvisable to exceed 2 gm daily of metformin.
  • The daily dose should then be gradually decreased until the minimum amount needed to control blood glucose levels is achieved.
    Over dose:
  • Overdosage can cause hypoglycemia which in turn can lead to behavior changes and coma.
  • The patient should be given oral or intravenous glucose.
  • There may also appear gastrointestinal symptoms and signs of hyperlactacidemia that require hospitalization and treatment of lactic acidosis.


  • Hypersensitivity to Glibenclamide or Metformin HCl.
  • Latent diabetes, suspected diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy, insulin dependent diabetes, diabetic coma.
  • Renal dysfunction and congestive heart failure.

Side effects

  • Hypoglycemia may occur rarely especially in elderly patient.
  • Gastro-intestinal reaction such as nausea, gastralgia, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia.
  • Headache.

Drug Interaction

The glucose-lowering effect of sulfonyl-urea can be:
• Increased by Dicumarol and dicumarol derivatives, by mono aminoxidase inhibitor, by sulfa drug, phenylbutazone and its derivative, perhexiline and large amounts of alcohol.
• It is decreased by adrenalin, corticosteroids, contraceptives, thiazide diuretic and barbiturates.
• Caution must be exercised when administering along with beta-blockers.
• Biguanides may increase the effects of anticoagulants.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Glimet Forte 5/800 should not be used during pregnancy and lactation.

Warning and Precaution

  • Glimet Forte 5/800 should not be used during pregnancy and lactation.
  • In the events of symptoms of hypoglycaemia (headache, irritability, sleep disorders, depression, tremors, sweating) give carbohydrates (sugar).
  • The risk of lactic acidosis (anorexia, nausea ,fever, vomiting, increases respiratory frequency ,malaise, abdominal pain, diarrhea ,blackout or loss of consciousness) is more frequent in:
    - Patients over 60 years of age.
    - In Patients with impaired renal and/or liver function, cardio- respiratory insufficiency, alcoholism, prolonged fasting, undergoing treatment with diuretics and in case of gastrointestinal disorders.
    so that the physician should also be informed.
